Alterations to an existing house in Johannesburg: the client presented a relatively new house in good condition that just needed some life breathed back into it. Our proposal is to remove the existing dark wood laminate flooring and replace it with clean, high quality, light tiles to reflect more light into the space from the limited windows and create a flow through all of the spaces on the ground floor. The soffit is low so we have to make the space feel taller and bigger through materials and lighting. Removing the internal walls that separated the living areas from the kitchen and dining room, has created a luxurious open plan, making each space feel bigger.
The addition of down-lights in all the spaces brightens up the interior and feature lights over the dining room table, bar and kitchen island creates a sense of space. The new bar area will add value to the clients’ entertainment lifestyle and makes use of a corner of the house previously not utilized. The addition of stacking doors on both sides of the living area, creates a source of natural lighting and ventilation, opening up the interior spaces to the outside. A timber pergola and deck serves as an outdoor breakfast nook, extending the living space and creating a link between the interior and the previously not utilised garden area.
